Water Pump Replacement

At Parkway Car Care in Rowlett, we provide a full range of automotive maintenance and repair services. Water pump replacement is among the services we offer.

Water pump replacement can be performed either as a stand-alone service or in conjunction with timing belt replacement.

To prevent engine damage from overheating, the water pump must continually circulate coolant to the radiator whenever the engine is running. Typically, manufacturers recommend water pump replacement after 7–10 years—check the owner’s manual for the specific time interval for your vehicle. If you can’t find the owner’s handbook or are unsure, call us. Our service advisors will be glad to look up this information for your particular vehicle.

So Why Does the Water Pump Need to be Replaced?

The water pump is subject to both thermal and mechanical stresses, and as a result, many issues can arise. Coolant leaks may develop because bearings and seals wear out over time. Even a small leak should be a cause for concern, as it indicates that the water pump is starting to fail. If you notice serious leakage from the “weep hole,” it’s definitely time to replace the water pump. Additionally, if you hear loud noises from the water pump bearings, have it checked by a professional mechanic.

At Parkway Car Care, we recommend replacing the water pump either due to the passage of time, as recommended in your owner’s manual, or in conjunction with a timing belt replacement.

The reason to replace the water pump during the timing belt replacement is that a large part of the water pump replacement cost is tied to the disassembly of various components to access the water pump. Since these components are already disassembled during a timing belt replacement, you’ll save on labor costs. Given the typical annual driving distance, the interval that calls for a timing belt replacement (around 100,000 miles) often coincides with the 7 years that many manufacturers recommend for water pump replacement. During the water pump replacement, we will also check the cooling system thermostat and inspect the condition of the hoses, as they can become brittle with age and may need to be replaced to prevent coolant leaks.
